The Sun, The Stars

Of course, the Sun is also a star. Here we present three films in which the Sun and the stars are the main players, films full of light, movement, and wonder….

Sun Tunnels / Nancy Holt/ 1978 / 16mm 26mins
A personal record of the making the filmmaker’s art-work, “Sun Tunnels,” in the remote northwest Utah desert. Being aligned with the sunsets and sunrises during the summer and winter solstices, it indicates the daily and yearly cycle of the sun.

Observando Del Cielo / Jeanne Liotta /  2007 / 16mm 19mins
Seven years of celestial field recordings gathered from the chaos of the cosmos and inscribed onto film from various locations upon this turning tripod Earth. Natural VLF radio recordings of the magnetosphere allow the universe to speak for itself.

Star Garden / Stan Brakhage /1985/ 16mm 20mins
“The STAR is the sun. The imaginary sun begins its course throughout whatever darkened room this film is seen within. It can be seen to shift its thought-light gradually back through aftertones and imaginings of the stars of the film, till it achieves a one-to-one relationship with moon again”. SB.
