Algeria (extract of perfumes)

The Dream That Kicks is delighted to present a selection of films curated by Hanan Benammar / Vandaler Forening.

Selected films will survey a broad spectrum of work by artists with ties to Algeria including Algerian filmmakers and those that have produced work that politically, poetically or in other ways comment on the country and its peoples.

Space is given to those offering an experimental approach in narrating historical events through everyday life, social conditions and intimate encounters.

This event will take the form of an open conversation, around collective memory and individual reminiscence. We invite you to participate and take a glimpse into Algerian history and its multiple narratives that radiate beyond borders, beyond nations, beyond ethnicity and beyond language.

As an example of what’s on offer, we will screen Sofiane Zouggar’s “What Remains”, part of an ongoing research-based project untitled The Memory of Violence. In this video-animation, Zouggar uses private conversations and recordings from different sources that relate to the Algerian Civil War, also known as The Black Decade, which opposed the Algerian government to Islamist terrorists…

This edition of Dream That Kicks forms part of a larger programme showing in Cinemateket and elsewhere involving artists with a direct or remote link to Algeria.
