Steina and Woody Vasulka : Video Pioneers

Noisefields_9.jpeg

We are proud to present a specially curated selection of work by video outriders Steina and Woody Vasulka.
Atelier Nord’s Artistic Director, Ivar Smedstad will select material from the Vasulkas’ vast output over more than 50 years. Steina and Woody Vasulka are major figures in video art history, technical pioneers who have contributed enormously to the evolution of the medium. Their output dates from the mid 60s and their technological investigations into analog and digital processes and development of electronic imaging tools, which began in the early 1970s, place them among the primary architects of an expressive electronic vocabulary of image-making.

The Vasulkas’ early collaborative efforts, produced from 1970 to 1974, include phenomenological explorations that deconstruct the materiality of the electronic signal and analyze the imaging capabilities of video tools. Central to these exercises are explorations of the malleability of the image, the manipulation of electronic energy, and the interrelation of sound and image.

Their analogue videos and experiments with lens-based media and digital processors from the early 1970s to the early 80s reveal how the Vasulkas’ methods anticipated the virtual modes of image-making that are dominant today.
This screening will act as a finissage to the month-long exhibition It’s All About the Signal running at Atelier Nord ANX, from 20th October to 20th November 2016. Please visit ateliernord.no for further details. Atelier Nord ANX , Olaf Ryes plass 2 (entrance Sofienberggt.), Oslo.
