LUNAR DUST
Live video performance by BILLY ROISZ

Vienna-based Billy Roisz is one of the best-known figures on the Austrian experimental scene. Her practice encompasses sound art, film, live cinema and curation.

She is an award winner who has screened work internationally over many years, including at the Berlinale (DE), Rotterdam (NL) and Ann Arbor (USA). She has made many audio releases with renown collaborators over twenty years.

Her strength lies in her ability to translate experimental music into visual memory images, revealing borrowings from minimal and conceptual art. Her specialization is feedback video and video/sound interaction using monitors, cameras, video mixingdesks, selfbuilt synth, computer, bass guitar etc.

Live video performance LUNAR DUST is a journey through atomised digital imagery and sonic noise fields. Roisz investigates and exposes the mind’s tendency to perceive familiar shapes in random patterns thereby creating a dreamlike state. It draws on the phenomenon of pareidolias, where, for instance, many cultures project a face or a rabbit or a figure walking onto the disc of the moon’s surface composed of scattered light and shadow. The viewer/listener is taken across the boundaries between the real and the imagined.

The stream of seemingly random sounds and visuals take on a strange familiarity—glitches in the digital fabric evoke fleeting memories of places never seen, of echoes with no origin – a hyperreal space. The soundscape is a manifestation of noise particles—a dense collage of textures that fluctuate between harsh, abrasive tones and soft, drifting murmurs.

Made up of video, electronics, microphones, and cymbals, and featuring a special sound collaborator, a synaesthesia-inducing, sense-boggling audiovisual trip guaranteed.
