COUNTING is Jem Cohen’s voiceless and gorgeously photographed drift through cities as various as New York, Moscow, Istanbul, Oporto, St.Petersburg and Sharjah. It unspools as a sort of manifesto in 15 elegant, enigmatic chapters on mortality, globalism, jet lag, personal loss and the clash between the built and natural environment.
Cohen works with film as a material object, focusing on subject matter, pacing and sound design to create an overwhelmingly aesthetic experience.
